Application of plant extracts in the field of feed

June 22, 2022

A large number of data show that plant extracts are regarded as the preferred alternative to antibiotics because of their safety, high efficiency, stability, and controllability. It is of great significance to promote the safety of feed and livestock products, protect the health of consumers, and comprehensively promote the sustainable and healthy development of the feed industry.
Overview of Plant Extracts
A typical modern plant feed additive consists mainly of plant extracts from one or more sources. Some plants have been used as or as components of human food, such as rosemary, thyme, oregano, yucca, garlic, various citrus, fenugreek and star anise, phytoestrogens, plant polysaccharides and other plant extracts . Plant extract additives have a strong threat to those bacteria that are resistant to antibiotic growth promoters, thus effectively protecting animals.
Chinese herbal plant extract
More than 100 kinds of medicinal plants are known as feed additives, such as garlic, pepper, wormwood, pine needles, ginger, cinnamon, pepper, pepper, Radix japonica, Andrographis paniculata, Banlangen, Licorice, Atractylodes, Ophiopogon japonicus, Agrimony, etc. Chinese herbal feed additives contain a variety of nutrients and bioactive substances, and have both nutritional and health care functions, and have the advantages of simplicity, low cost, strong versatility, no toxic side effects, and no drug resistance. Studies have shown that extracts of garlic, valerian/oregano, and mustard greens have a strong ability to threaten bacteria. Valerian/Oregano (OEO) natural extract has good antioxidant capacity and immunomodulatory function, stable properties and easy to use.
phytoestrogens
The daidzein with weak estrogen-like activity can significantly improve the weight gain and feed utilization efficiency of male animals. Increase blood testosterone, D-endorphin, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-I, triiodothyronine, thyroxine and insulin levels, thereby promoting muscle protein deposition and accelerating muscle growth and development. Since daidzein can bind to E2 receptors such as the hypothalamus and pituitary to varying degrees, it affects the neuroendocrine system axis and growth axis of animals, promotes the development of animal mammary glands, and affects endocrine activity, so it is widely used in lactating livestock.
